Tile Roofing
Tile roof systems can be made of clay or concrete and have similar physical properties and installation methods. Each material is formed into curved barrel shapes and interlocked into place during installation to reinforce the roof’s strength.
Tile roofing provides great aesthetics for homes with a southwestern or Spanish Mission design as well as some modern designs that come in various colors.
Tile roofing is a low-maintenance, natural, and porous material that is resistant to:
- fire
- wind
- rot
- insects
BENEFITS OF TILE ROOFING
Long-lasting | Roof tiles have some of the lowest lifecycle costs of any roofing material. Centuries-old clay tile roofs are still enduring today, and concrete tile roofs have an expected average lifespan of 50 years or more. |
Design-friendly | Roof tiles can match any architectural style required and are formed to emulate traditional barrel style or other roofing materials such as wood and slate. |
Weather-ready | Roof tiles provide a tough, water-shedding outer shell with the underlayment working as an extra shield and can resist damage from hailstones as large as 2”. The tiles are designed and tested for 150 MPH wind speeds. |
Ventilation & Insulation | Natural air ventilation under the tile creates a heat transfer barrier that can provide the benefit of a cooler house in the summer and a warmer house in the winter. |
Reflective | Independent testing performed at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Lab has demonstrated that tiles can cut the transfer of heat by up to 70% |
Environmentally Friendly | Materials do not deplete limited natural resources and have no chemical preservatives used in the production; all waste can be recycled and does not go into landfills. |
Tile roofing can be found most commonly in the Southwest and the Coastal South.
While tile roofing is attractive, drawbacks can include high installation costs, compared to asphalt or metal roofing, and material brittleness, which can cause cracking or breaking, risking damage to a roof’s underlayment.
